I believe there are two types of families. One, that you’re born into, and the other, is the one you create for yourself. The first kind is the family that you have no control over, but if you have positive relations, they are your world. The second kind, is the one voluntary kind. It is the type of family that is created out of mutual respect, understanding and care for each other.
In my childhood, we travelled a lot. We were used to relocating to a new place once every year or once in two years, since dad has a transferable job. That meant changing a lot of schools, which meant that my social circles kept changing. I’d learnt it from quite an early age that I shouldn’t attach myself to people easily, since I’d leave them soon. But rather, engage with everyone and keep a harmonious bond to keep my life interesting and full of zest.
Sure, I had my days when I used to get jealous of seeing people share their moments with their best friends since they were in Nursery, while I didn’t even remember my classmates from two years ago. But those feelings of jealousy are now long gone, because sooner than later, I found my “Home Team”.
I would describe my home-team as a set of people that I’ve shared bucket full of memories with, good and bad both, sometimes fought too, but ended up understanding each other better, and the people I know who would have my back, no matter what. My home team is my support system. A group of people I can call my home, despite being in different parts of this world, let alone country.
I believe everyone deserves a home team for themselves. If not a team, at least a couple of individuals they can call home.
I’m still an extrovert who loves socialising and getting to know people from different walks of life. I have a lot of friends and acquaintances. But I believe nobody can replace my home team for me. And I’m thankful for not having one, but a variety of people who love me unconditionally, despite my quirks.
I know that Friendship Day is quite far, but this is a small token of appreciation for you all, for being there for me, at every given turn. Keeping my home team’s identity anonymous, I hope y’all know who you are!
And to everyone who’s struggling/fighting/having disputes with their home team, my only suggestion is, do not lose them. They’re the family you chose.
